How to
transition to ITIL 4
ITIL v3
candidates can transition to ITIL 4 while still acquiring the
skills and knowledge needed to understand the core concepts of the
updated guidance. The certification scheme shared below is aligned
with ITIL v3 and has been streamlined to provide a clear path for
ITIL v3 Practitioners to continue their ITIL journey.
ITIL V3
FOUNDATION
If a candidate
has taken ITIL v3 Foundation, it is recommended that they take the
ITIL 4 Foundation exam in order to transition to ITIL 4.
ITIL V3 INTERMEDIATE (3 OR 4
CREDITS ACHIEVED)
End learners
holding a low number of credits beyond Foundation have two options
to transition to ITIL 4, dependent on what they want to
achieve.
OPTION 1:
Candidates are encouraged to take ITIL 4 Foundation and a further
module in their preferred area of interest, becoming either an ITIL
4 Specialist, Strategist or Leader. If a candidate does not intend
to pursue the ITIL 4 Managing Professional designation, then the
recommended route would be to take the relevant modules in their
area of interest.
OPTION 2: If a
candidate wishes to attain the ITIL v3 Expert or ITIL 4 Managing
Professional qualifications, they are encouraged to achieve 17
credits from ITIL v3 to become eligible to take the ITIL 4 Managing
Professional Transition module. If an end learner wishes to attain
the designation, ITIL 4 Managing Professional, they will need to
collect v3 credits until they have acquired the requisite 17
credits to be eligible to take the Managing Professional Transition
module.
They can also continue to collect credits until the ITIL v3 exams are discontinued in 2020, accumulating enough points to take the Managing Professional Transition module. The benefit of this is that they are eligible to fast track past the v3 Managing Across the Lifecycle course and exam.
ITIL
INTERMEDIATE/PRACTITIONER (6 OR MORE CREDITS ACHIEVED BEYOND
FOUNDATION)
If an end
learner has achieved 6 credits or more since taking v3 Foundation,
then it is in their interest to continue collecting v3 credits to
prepare for an easy transition to ITIL 4 Managing Professional.
They will need to reach 17 credits to be eligible to take the ITIL
4 Managing Professional Transition module.
ITIL V3 EXPERT
If a candidate
has achieved ITIL v3 Expert, they can take the ITIL 4 Managing
Professional Transition module to achieve the ITIL 4 Managing
Professional qualification. At that point, if the end learner
wishes to become an ITIL 4 Strategic Leader, they would only need
to complete the ITIL 4 Leader Digital and Strategy module. Once
they complete both streams, they would be eligible to move onto
ITIL Master.
